Taika Waititi Talks About Taking On Star Wars After Working for Marvel

Taika Waititi had done some great work with Marvel Studios helming Thor: Ragnarok, but now he has some work put in on a galaxy far far away. Waititi has been hired to direct an episode of Star Wars: The Mandalorian, and he talks a bit about getting to work with Lucasfilm and Jon Favreau.

During a panel at TCA 2019 (via /Film) Waititi explained:

"Favreau's a genius and so smart and so good at what he does and creating these worlds… The scripts are really great. It was really fun doing something in the Star Wars universe. It was every kid's dream just to see a stormtrooper. When you're doing these scenes with like 50 or 60 of them, it's pretty amazing. I loved it."

If you watched Ragnarok, you'll already get a good sense of some Star Wars vibes from the film, especially when you look at the world of Sakaar. I also think it's a fun coincidence that Favreau, who is the showrunner for The Mandalorian, directed the very first MCU movie, Iron Man.

We don't know exactly what to expect from The Mandalorian yet, but Waititi has explained that it will feel very close to the original trilogy. After all the hate that came from the Star Wars prequels from being too different, it seems that Disney is keeping to some strict rules by making sure that their era of Star Wars stays pretty close to the original.

No release date has been set for Star Wars: The Mandalorian, but the series is expected to debut alongside Disney's streaming service sometime later this year.
