Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s J.J. Abrams Teases 'Very Emotional' Scene for C-3PO

Star Wars fans weren't wrong when they expressed concern for C-3PO after seeing the droid talk about taking "one last look" at his friends in one of the trailers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

According to The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams, fans ought to expect some emotional scenes from the fan-favorite communications protocol droid. Heading down to the Brazilian convention Comic-Con Experience in Sao Paulo (via ComicBook.com) to help promote his new Star Wars film together with some of the members of Episode IX's cast, Abrams decided to give fans a little heads up about the "very emotional" sequence with C-3PO.

Not only did C-3PO actor and Star Wars franchise veteran Anthony Daniels break down into tears after the sequence, but so did Kevin Smith, the director of the cult film Clerks and episode director of DC series like Supergirl.

The director reveals that the moment was "very emotional for Anthony," noting that "I remember after he did that scene and they moved his mask, there were just tears streaming down his face. We all felt it."

"In fact, Kevin Smith was there that day, and he was watching, and I went around to the corner and he looked like Anthony. It was very sweet, even on that day, to see them so emotional."

Guess we might have to expect the worst for C-3PO, though we're hoping that the droid doesn't get into anything too serious in Episode IX. C-3PO has been one of the mainstays of the franchise, and it would be heartbreaking if we really lost him.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
