Star Wars: The Last Jedi Novelization to Reveal Luke had a Wife

When we meet Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he had resigned himself from society to quietly die out in his lonely island. Rumor has it, though, that the novelization for the movie will reveal that Luke Skywalker had a wife.

According to Dork Side of the Force, someone with an early copy of the book has revealed the first sentence of the novel:

"Luke Skywalker stood in the cooling sands of Tatooine, his wife by his side."

In the now-debunked Legends, Luke had married a woman named Mara Jade; but in the new canon, Mara is nowhere to be found, and there isn't even a hint of Luke having a family. Surely he would have mentioned something like this to Rey during her stay in the island.

My guess is that it's a vision during Luke's meditation where he imagines what his life would be like if he never followed Obi-Wan's call to adventure and stayed on Tatooine. He would ponder on his imaginary wife and children, and then his vision will be broken by Rey arriving with his old lightsaber.

It's just my guess, but I think it would be a clever way to incorporate Mara Jade into canon, even if she was just a vision. Granted Luke's time alone and the Force's power to give visions, I think he would have gotten a glimpse of what his life would have been like if he decided to stay a simple moisture farmer.

Of course, we'll just have to wait till the book comes out to see if this news is real. I sure am hoping it is.

The novelization for Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out March 6.
