Star Wars: The Force Awakens Monopoly Criticized For Not Including Rey

Hasbro

Star Wars: The Force Awakens' plot may be focused around Luke Skywalker's disappearance, but some fans are enraged over an absence of another character — Rey (Daisy Ridley).

The problems of female characters being under-represented in geek merchandise still exists. When it's a secondary character like Black Widow or Gamora, at least toy companies have an excuse, but when the girl is the main character of the film, that's another story.

In Hasbro's Star Wars: The Force AwakensMonopoly, the four playable characters are Luke Skywalker, Finn, Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. Rey should have been in that set

This isn't the first time Rey has been missing from a set she should obviously be in. She was also missing in a set of Target Star Wars figures that seemed to represent the film's main characters.

There's no reason that Rey should be excluded from any Star Wars merchandise.

This 8-year-old girl said it well:

Entertainment Weekly reached out to Hasbro, and here's what their spokesperson said in response to that issue: "The Star Wars: Monopoly game was released in September, months before the movie's release, and Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance."

The spokesperson also said that Rey is featured in several Hasbro games, including Hands Down, Guess Who, and chess, and that "fans will see more Rey product hitting store shelves this month, including 6-inch and 12-inch Rey action figures. We are thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines."
