Star Wars: Rian Johnson Talks New Force Powers in The Last Jedi

Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be discussed

Of all the things fans hate about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the treatment of Luke Skywalker might top all of them. While his actions were actually explained in the movie, fans took umbrage with the fact that he wasn't "acting like Luke," something Mark Hamill also expressed concern over. Killing him didn't help either. However, before he died, Luke unleashed a Force-powered Astral Projection that distracted The First Order and allowed The Resistance to escape.

Some fans were quick to call the power a deus-ex machina, while others praised it for being a fun twist and a cool moment. Whatever the case, fans are talking about it and the future of how The Force will be used in upcoming films. Director Rian Johnson added his two cents to the discussion, telling the Los Angeles Times that it was a natural progression of how The Force works.

"Force-grabbing didn't come around until Empire, it wasn't in A New Hope. Same with Force ghosts. They'd introduce new ideas of what could happen with the Force each time."

It's a fair point and makes the hologram/telepathic projection feel more natural to the Jedi mythos. Speaking of that new power, Johnson also had a lot to add about that particular instance in the film.

"When Luke shows up he's projecting, it's like a hardcore variation of what Kylo and Rey have been doing the whole time and that's why it takes so much out of him," he explained. "We tried to play really, really fair. In terms of his footsteps – we removed all of his foley — there are no footstep sounds. They never touch. And if you look, the salt flakes that are falling are sparking off of Kylo's saber and not off of Luke's."

Paying that much attention to detail is intriguing and might make the film worth watching a second time. Despite the mixed reception, there's no denying that Johnson's The Last Jedi felt different from most Star Wars films. Of course, that is the main cause of controversy and some fans might even choose to wipe this film from their memories.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now showing in theaters.
