Star Wars has released an official statement standing alongside the "Black Lives Matter" movement which surged after the unwarranted killing of George Floyd at the hands of the police in Minneapolis last week.
Posting on the official Star Wars Twitter handle, Star Wars has offered a statement in support of the protests that have been going on in the US the past few days after an African American man suffocated to death in broad daylight when a white Minneapolis police officer refused to stop kneeling on his neck.
"We stand against racism. We stand for inclusion. We stand with our fellow Black employees, storytellers, creators, and the entire Black community. We must unite and speak out," Star Wars' statement reads.
Suspected of having a counter fit bill, Floyd was arrested outside Cup Foods grocery store on Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis. Foregoing protocol, the Minneapolis police subdued Floyd by kneeling on his neck. Though he pleaded with the police officer saying that he couldn't breathe, Officer Derek Chauvin continued to kneel down on Floyd until he visibly passed out. Floyd was rushed to the hospital but was announced dead on arrival.
Protests against Floyd's death and similar acts of police brutality against the African American community have sparked across the country despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Corporate entities have come out in support of the "Black Lives Matter" movement, including Star Wars, Disney, EA Sports, and Bethesda.
Star Wars actor John Boyega has also been vocal about his support for the movement, posting Tweets and sharing videos on social media.
It's definitely great to see Star Wars standing on the side of justice.
