Star Wars: Qui-Gon Jinn Could Have Been Emperor Palpatine's Greatest Threat

There is little doubt that Qui-Gon Jinn is one of the most enigmatic characters in the Star Wars Universe. Even though he only appeared in one prequel film, the Jedi Master captivated audiences with his absolute certainty about Anakin Skywalker being the Chosen One. Unfortunately, Qui-Gon's ideals also made him the one person who could possibly ruin Emperor Palpatine's plans and this led to his shocking death.

When we met Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, he was already a Jedi Master on a personal mission to find the Chosen One. However, we never learned how he knew so much about the prophecy and why it was so important for him to find this mysterious being. Luckily, we are learning more about Qui-Gon, thanks to Claudia Gray's book Master & Apprentice.

In the novel, it is revealed to Qui-Gon that he is living in the time of the prophecy about the Chosen One. Interestingly, he had been studying about it so much that he would have figured out that there is more than just one prophecy and that they are all interconnected. If Qui-Gon survived The Phantom Menace, he could have done more research and thwarted the Emperor's plans.

We already know that Qui-Gon is an effective mentor considering how he trained Obi-Wan Kenobi. If he was still around after Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon could have mentored Anakin and thus made the boy aware of the prophecies surrounding him (via ScreenRant). In addition to this, Qui-Gon might have provided better guidance as Anakin struggled with the Dark Side and the Light. Unfortunately, this also made it necessary for the Dark Side to kill Qui-Gon so they could use Anakin to their advantage.

We may never know just what would happen if Qui-Gon had survived and made Anakin his padawan. But for now, we can imagine things would have been a lot different if the future Darth Vader had a different mentor.
