Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Director Boasts ‘Thoughtful’ Lightsaber Combat

With Star Wars Battlefront II mostly focusing on gunplay between soldiers and infantry, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is going to bring lightsabers back in the spotlight. While The Force Unleashed games gave Galen Marek an insane amount of Force powers, FO's Cal Kestis is going to be a more grounded fighter.

Talking to Esquire, game director Stig Asmussen talks about how he came up with ‘thoughtful combat' for the next big Star Wars game. He says, "We had to create these systems that would force the player to unlock the enemy to allow for that one hit kill." That means players won't be able to mindlessly slice through trooper after trooper; they have to be smart about how they take on each enemy.

It kind of makes sense that Cal wouldn't be so powerful, as he had to halt his Jedi training in the midst of the Order 66 purge. This makes for a more seamless ‘growth' of his powers in the game, as he unlocks more skills as he slowly re-learns what he used to train for. Besides that, it makes for a more challenging environment for the player, sometimes having to prioritize sneaking around rather than going headfirst into combat.

After the disastrous launch of Battlefront II, EA is making sure that there won't be any snags when it comes to the release of Fallen Order. If anything, early reactions have been great, and a lot of people are eager to find out about the story of Cal Kestis.

Catch Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order when it comes out for Xbox One, PS4, and PX on Nov. 15.
