Star Wars: Episode IX’s Skywalker Title May Actually Refer To Grey Jedi

Last weekend, Lucasfilm released the very first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX, revealing the film's official title, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While the title of the third and final film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy has sparked theories that The Rise of Skywalker might actually retcon The Last Jedi's take on Rey's (Daisy Ridley) origin, others speculate that the term Skywalker may actually come to mean a group of Jedi.

Now, the latest theory says that the Skywalker may actually be designated to a specific group of Jedi – the Grey Jedi. Star Wars fans who've been following Star Wars lore know that in between the Light and the Dark Side are the Grey Jedi. While the term has also come to describe Jedi who've distanced themselves from the Jedi High Council, operating outside the Jedi Code, it's also been a term used to describe Force Users walking between the light and dark sides of the Force without surrendering to the Darkness.

Star Wars Rebels approached this subject with Ahsoka Tano, and while the name wasn't really thrown around in the film, the concept was eased into Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

A new theory by Screen Rant suggests that The Rise of Skywalker can help pay off The Last Jedi's message, telling its audience that Star Wars hero's can now come from any place. This is an age where we no longer need prophecies and legacies. Nobodies can become heroes too. Before it was revealed that Luke (Mark Hamill) and Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) were actually the children of Darth Vader, Star Wars: A New Hope introduced its protagonist as a farm boy. Though fans knew that he was the son of a fallen Jedi, Luke could represent anyone from any other place.

Now, The Rise of Skywalker has the opportunity to return to that form – keeping Rey as an unwanted orphan of Jakku nobodies.
