Star Wars: Episode IX Teaser Trailer Confirms Emperor Palpatine’s Return

As expected, Lucasfilm dropped the very first teaser trailer for the ninth Star Wars episode with official title Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker during the film's panel at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration today, and the footage is packed with so many great new details – one of which includes the return of Palpatine.

The teaser trailer doesn't last for very long, but during the last shot of the video, fans get to see Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) walking across a grassy field facing a torrential ocean with the remains of a Death Star sitting across the horizon. Mark Hamill's voice over as Luke Skywalker can be heard in the background, telling fans that "no one's ever really gone," and just as the trailer blacks out, everyone gets to hear a very familiar cackle – Emperor Palpatine's.

Though there isn't anything else confirming Darth Sidious' return, Palpatine's cackle is as clear as day, confirming supposed leaks saying that the Star Wars villain would make a grand reappearance in the Star Wars franchise. Right now we're not quite sure what kind of role Palpatine might have in the film and to what extent he might appear in the Rise of Skywalker.

However, earlier rumors for the movie say that Ian McDiarmid will be returning as Palpatine to play a small but extremely crucial role in the Star Wars entry. There have been leaks suggesting that Palpatine may return as a Force Ghost in the movie, others suggest that he'll appear in Kylo Ren's visions.

It's definitely an exciting time for the Star Wars franchise and we can't wait to see what the Rise of Skywalker has in store for everyone.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
