Star Wars Editor On The Changes Ron Howard Brought To Solo

Solo: A Star Wars Story was shrouded in so much controversy when Lucasfilm decided to fire original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller last year. Filming had nearly been completed when the studio decided to part ways with the 21 Jumpstreet directors because of "creative" differences.

Though Ron Howard managed to assuage some of the fanbase's concerns about Solo after he was brought on board to replace Lord and Miller, there was still a lot of anxiety surrounding Solo. Now as the film continues to screen in cinemas, the Star Wars spinoff's editor, Pietro Scalia, opens up about what kind of changes Howard made when he took over as director of Solo.

Speaking in an interview with Slash Film, Scalia opened up about how the reunion between Han (Alden Ehrenreich) and Qi'ra actually went through some major changes once Lucasfilm brought Howard on board.

"It's a very delicate point, but also a very critical point in the story. They haven't seen each other for several years, how do they react to each other?" said Scalia. "That scene was shot several times. The first time around, when Chris and Phil were there, there were different actors, different blocking. Ron wanted to do something different and we shot it. It was not so much the performance, it was more about blocking and moving the camera, getting a little bit more of the environment and the party."

That's not all. The production also brought Marvel's Vision, Paul Bettany on board. Adding a new character to the film changed things a lot and so the production team had to reshoot the scene where Han gets to meet Qi'Ra.

Though there were reports last year that a lot of Lord and Miller's footage were still useable, the editor says that Howard actually reshot a majority of the Star Wars spinoff. According to Scalia, the tone in the output of Howard and the Miller and Lord directorial team were quite significantly different. The difference between the two was so vast that he needed to start from scratch once Howard began bringing him new footage to edit. Lucasfilm must have spent a lot on Solo, and this new report by Scalia adds a bit of weight to word that the studio spent a whopping $250 million on the Star Wars spinoff.
