Star Wars' Adam Driver on Why Playing Kylo Ren Can Be Hard Sometimes

Of all the new Star Wars characters to be introduced, Kylo Ren seems to be the one that has fans most interested. Few villains in the franchise have had the complexity and emotional depth that this character has shown, which has resonated with a lot of viewers. Now that he's in charge of the First Order, all eyes will be on Ren when Star Wars: Episode IX comes out next year.

Considering all of the things Ren has been through, it's not too surprising to know that portraying him can be difficult. However, Adam Driver told Vulture that it's not performing as Ren that makes it hard; it's the various antics that happen on set. Seemingly matching the Marvel-like tone that these movies have taken, it looks like a lot of silly stuff happens on set and it can be a bit distracting for Driver.

"Sometimes you have to be more focused in between scenes because what's happening is that, on something like Star Wars, it's pure comedy in between takes. It's stormtroopers running into walls because they can't see through their helmets."

He might not have the reputation that Tom Hardy or Christian Bale has gained, Driver has proven to be a quality performer that does well in pretty much every role given to him. He's impressed fans since his first mainstream gig in HBO's Girls and he continues to do so in other roles.

Still, hearing about the relatively light environment in the Star Wars set does make it seem fun to work there. Granted, being the Stormtrooper who hits a wall probably doesn't feel great but seeing it in action would elicit a few laughs. Hopefully, this doesn't affect Driver's performance in the highly-anticipated ninth installment.

Star Wars: Episode IX comes out on December 20, 2019.
