Spider-Man: Homecoming Still Hasn’t Revealed MJ

Even back when the characters for Spider-Man: Homecoming were first revealed in casting calls, the common speculation was that the "Michelle" character would be Spidey's love interest, Mary Jane Watson or MJ.

Zendaya eventually landed the role, but even as we see her first interaction with Tom Holland's Peter Parker in the newest trailer, it appears that people were wrong: no, she's not MJ.

Speaking with MTV News, Zendaya confirmed that it's a different character and not a placeholder on the script:

"My character is 100 percent Michelle. That's her name. I promise you I'm not lying."

Based on the short stint we saw of her in the trailer, she seems far from what the comics-based MJ is, at least. The high school setting would see MJ as the stereotypical popular girl, obsessed with acting while hiding the pain of an abused childhood.

Zendaya's Michelle doesn't seem to be going along this thread—but that's not exactly a reassurance, as Marvel Studios can easily swap the personality for a better fit to the story. Perhaps the question now is, if Zendaya won't be playing MJ, who is? Or will there even be a Mary Jane for Spider-Man: Homecoming?

The Amazing Spider-Man movies chose to focus on Pete's relationship with Gwen Stacy. And to be honest, that was a lot more interesting if only for the narrative. We'll have to see what Michelle will bring to the table—or are we expecting a bachelor Spidey during his run time with the Avengers?
