Spider-Man Far from Home: Jon Watts Talks About Bringing Back [Spoiler]

[SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME]

Besides the obvious reveal that Mysterio is the bad guy, Spider-Man: Far from Home still had a lot of neat surprises for us. For one, Peter was suddenly publicly outed as Spider-Man in the end of the film, and by J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson no less. Director Jon Watts talks a bit about bringing Simmons back into the fold, and how he took it when he was asked to return.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Watts revealed:

As we were talking about how that was going to be revealed, The Daily Bugle came up, and there wasn't even a question, honestly. It was like, "If we're gonna do The Daily Bugle, it's gonna be J. Jonah Jameson, and that has to be J.K. Simmons." It wasn't even a conversation. It was just like, "Yep. Everyone's in total agreement? Yep, let's do it."

Watts has explained that Simmons was initially weirded out when he was asked to come back, but he saw how his take could fit into the MCU, and he eventually came onboard. With this new persona of Jameson being a shock jockey, Simmons is free to play the exaggerated version of his character, and it would still make sense in a modern setting. Watts continues:

…It's very telling that he can still be performing in the same over-the-top exaggerated way that he was in the original trilogy, but now that is something that people totally recognize as a real-world character. Our world has become more cartoonish and his performance now seems completely realistic.

We don't really know how the Spider-Man franchise looks to move forward after this, but I guess that's what's exciting about it all. I would still love to see Peter working for Jameson eventually, but for now, I can't see a logical explanation that doesn't involve a Skrull pretending to be Peter and standing next to Spider-Man for everyone to see.
