Sony Gears Up To Try Its Hand at Mobile Games

Nintendo made some solid waves when it took a gamble at the mobile industry, predominantly with Pokemon Go.

Considering how big this game hit on its first few weeks, and with the other titles like Miitomo and future planned mobile titles from Nintendo, it's not surprising that rival companies are also planning to take a piece of the mobile pie.

According to CNBC, Sony's gaming arm, PlayStation may be targeting the mobile industry next. In fact, five titles are already in the pipeline, all headed towards the mobile gaming market.

Kantan Games CEO Serkan Toto shared that it was the right time for the company to start catering to the market in Japan.

"Japan is a market where Sony and other console makers are struggling to sell units. Sony had to react. People are consuming smartphone games like there is no tomorrow."

That's not to say that Sony is already looking to roll out games this year or even next year. The earliest expected release for the games is sometime towards March 2018, particularly for Apple and Android. This will be done via Sony's ForwardWorks subsidiary, its arm which is focused on mobile gaming.

So far, Sony seems bent on rolling out to Japan and other Asian countries first for its mobile games.

The company is already doing well in terms of its gaming division. Despite slower sales for the PS4 compared to its biggest rival, the PlayStation VR is seeing some fairly good traction.

Whether or not Sony hits a good mobile game in the same vein as Pokemon Go remains to be seen. Perhaps an innovative mobile game from the Uncharted franchise? Or its recent The Last of Us success? Or, if we're pushing it, maybe a Crash Bandicoot extension—because who wouldn't want the 20th anniversary of the franchise to bleed into mobile?
