Solo: Alden Ehrenreich Defends Ex-Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller

After Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from directing Solo: A Star Wars Story, more and more rumors from behind the scenes were making it look like the pair were severely unprepared to direct such a huge project, and that even the crew was starting to question their directing style. Star of Solo, Alden Ehrenreich, has come in defense of Lord and Miller, and says that they were actually very pleasant on set, and got along well with everyone.

Talking to Esquire, Ehrenreich addressed the rumor about the cast and crew ‘applauding' when Lord and Miller were officially fired. He explains:

"For a crew to do that would mean they hated [Lord and Miller], which was not by any stretch the case…"

On a personal level, it felt emotional, for them to be going after we'd set out on that course together. Because I spent a lot of time with them, and we had a really good relationship."

It was said that Lord and Miller had approached Solo with their signature comedy style, putting more emphasis on improv and humor—something that didn't sit well with the higher-ups, who were said to have been very proud of Lawrence Kasdan's script. With Ron Howard onboard, the production was then put at ease with a more ‘classically trained' director.

Ehrenreich had also said that he had no clue about the duo being fired, and that the actors were clueless as well:

"the actors are at the kids' table, unless you're also a producer of the movie. So you're really kept out of all the backroom dynamics of what was going on."

For now, it looks like Lucasfilm is very pleased with what Ron Howard had to bring, and early reactions to previews have been mostly positive.

Let's hope that Solo: A Star Wars Story is as good as they say when the film comes out May 25.
