Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Emilia Clarke Is Sick Of The Term “Strong Woman”

It looks like Solo: A Star Wars Story actress Emilia Clarke is tired of people calling female lead characters "strong women."

The British actress who gained popularity for her role as Daenerys Targaryen the Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones just recently went on an interview with Variety to help promote her upcoming Star Wars film, the Solo spinoff.

During the discussion with the publication, Clarke explained why she hates hearing the word "strong women," saying the term implies that all other female characters are weak.

"'How does it feel to play a strong woman?' I'll tell you how it feels to play a woman, the end. That's it," the actress elaborated. "Take the 'strong' out of there, find another adjective, dammit. I'm just playing women. If it's not strong, what is it? You're telling me that there's another option? There's a 'weak' option? You think a lead in a movie is going to be weak? It just doesn't bear having the conversation, so enough already with the 'strong women,' please. Let's just be 'women.'"

Clarke does make an interesting point. Putting a tag on a "strong woman" implies that other female characters in the film are weak. Women already face so much because of their sex that it's impossible to deny the fact that they've been strengthened by the troubles they constantly face.

Of course, while Clarke does say she's frustrated with the term, the Solo star also understands that Hollywood still has a long way to go in offering women the same opportunities as men, especially when it comes to taking center stage as a film's hero.

For those who aren't familiar with Clarke's character in Solo, the Game of Thrones star is playing Qi'Ra, a character who seems both tough and glamorous at the same time. We can't wait to see what kind of adventures Qi'Ra's going to go on with Alden Ehrenreich's Solo in the upcoming spinoff.

Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres May 25.
