It looks like Sherlock Season 5 may still happen after all, as its creator, Steven Moffat, remains open to doing the series—that is, if Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return to reprise their roles as Sherlock and Watson, respectively.

In his appearance on BBC’s Today show Tuesday, January 3, the famed TV producer-writer hinted at the future of Sherlock Season 5 six years after the previous season ended. So, is there still hope?

Steven Moffat is Open to Doing Sherlock Season 5

Moffat quipped that he would “start writing tomorrow” if the series’ two main stars would return and agree to reprise their fan-favorite roles, as published by Deadline.

However, he knew they were up on “bigger and better things,” but that didn’t stop him from remaining positive about the show’s continuation.

“They’re on to bigger and better things but Martin and Benedict, please come back?” he said.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman’s Take on Sherlock Season 5

In an interview with Esquire in 2021, Cumberbatch had a “never say never” take on the future of Sherlock Season 5.

“I really like that character. It’s just, the circumstances need to be right, and I think maybe it’s too soon now to see it have another life,” he stated. “I think, wonderful as it is, it’s had its moment for now. But that’s not to say it wouldn’t have another iteration in the future.”

Alternatively, Freeman said on The Jonathan Ross Show that though he’s a “fan of things being finite,” he believes in a “good idea and a good script.”

“If something comes up that persuades us all—it would have to be us all—then my door would always be open,” he said.

The Talks about Sherlock Season 5

Talks about Sherlock Season 5 began as soon as the fourth season finale dropped in 2017. However, the main problem at the time was its two lead stars’ busy schedules.

With the success of the series, both of their careers took off. They both become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Cumberbatch now famously known as Dr. Strange and Freeman as Everett Ross.

Though they’re all up to it, the future of Sherlock Season 5 depends on their schedules.
