Shazam! Director Explains How The Film's Comedy is Different From Marvel Movies

Fans were relieved and somewhat worried when they found out that Shazam! would be lighter than the previous DCEU entries. Relieved because the concept has a kid turn into a superhero, so a lighter tone makes perfect sense for the character. Worried due to the mixed reception of Justice League, with many fans disapproving of Joss Whedon's quips throughout the film.

Thankfully, director David F. Sandberg has clarified that the film's comedy won't rely on quips like the Marvel movies.

During a Reddit Q and A, Sandberg confirmed that the comedy would be more situational than quip-based. He was quick to point out that it wasn't a jab at Marvel and even pointed out that quips can be great when used well.

DISCUSSION: So, is it safe to say that Shazam! will probably be DCEU's first comedic movie?

.

Sandberg also said that he's hoping to find the perfect mix of comedy and drama since too much of the former can take away the film's stakes. Take a look at Thor: Ragnarok, which is so funny it made most of that film's dramatic moments feel pointless. Here is hoping Shazam! finds a better balance.

Shazam! is slated for an April 5, 2019, release.
