Seth MacFarlane: The Orville Is A Response To Too Much Dystopian Sci-Fi

Everyone who loves Star Trek knows that the show is built on the ideal of a utopian future where man (and alien) kind sets aside their differences in order to progress into a brighter future. Seth MacFarlane is starring in a new show called The Orville which looks to parody Star Trek, but it looks like the show will also be emphasizing on a future utopia.

Speaking to the TCA (via Collider), MacFarlane explains that this show tries to look on the more positive side of the future in the midst of all the dystopian future stories that are coming out. He explains:

"I miss the forward thinking, optimistic, aspirational space that Star Trek used to offer. It's a space waiting to be filled in this day and age when we are getting a lot of dystopian fiction."

I never noticed till it was pointed out, but there have been a lot of stories coming out that has a setting in a post-apocalyptic future. We've already had a lot of Hunger Games, Divergent, The Purge, and Mad Max: Fury Road; not to mention next year will see Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ready Player One.

The Orville looks to be a lot of fun, and with the new Star Trek: Discovery coming out, Orville is said to be a bit more old school and seeks to be closer to the classic series that it was based on. Let's hope MacFarlane and his crew deliver.

The Orville airs on Fox Sept. 10.
