Robert Downey Jr on Why Smart Hulk's Avengers: Endgame Debut was Inevitable

Anyone who has seen the Marvel Cinematic Universe films has probably wondered about the eventual debut of Professor Hulk, something that finally happened in Avengers: Endgame. Not surprisingly, Robert Downey Jr. claims that this was something that was expected to happen in the MCU.

Downey was recently a guest on Joe Rogan's podcast where he discussed how Bruce Banner merging with the Hulk was the only way to go for the character.

"After so many times, and this is the genius of people who break and shape stories over there, [Kevin] Feige and his team as they go, ‘He's Hulk then he's not Hulk, he's Hulk, it's a big battle, oh, he's so conflicted…What if he could meet himself in the middle?' Then, what corner have we painted ourselves in by having him meet himself in the middle because then you can't ever…If that doesn't work, you can't go back to the way it was. You've done it. Or, you can go back to the way it was," Downey said.

The Iron Man star was also quick to credit the people behind MCU for making the introduction of Smart Hulk possible.

"I just think that the real genius of the Marvel creative team, and the Russo Brothers who did the last few," Downey said. "Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. They go, ‘We love writing ourselves into a corner. We love it.' Because, then, it activates all of those ‘How do we get out of purgatory juices' and then you get the next right idea."

For now, we're not sure what will happen to Smart Hulk after the events in Endgame. Nevertheless, we're looking forward to new stories involving the Hulk in the near future.

Downey's new film Dolittle will premiere on January 17.
