Robert Downey Jr. Makes A Touching Case For Chris Evans As The Heart Of The MCU

Iron Man might be technically the hero that began the Marvel Cinematic Universe but according to Robert Downey Jr., the reason why the MCU actually works is because of Captain America star Chris Evans.

Now that his MCU contract is coming to an end with the release of Avengers: Endgame, Evans was just recently interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter for a detailed profile on his life and his career. RDJ decided to add in a few kind words for the article, saying that the Captain America: First Avenger star is one of the main reasons why the entire franchise works.

"[Evans'] suspension of his own disbelief, regardless of whatever doubts he had, is the reason all these other worlds are able to be built," Downey Jr. explained. "Starting with Avengers, and then Guardians, and Black Panther. People love to say — and I'll eat it up — that I'm kind of the progenitor of this whole universe. But if you want to talk about it in terms of team building, and you want to talk about it as the most successful creative relay race in the history of cinema, he was the critical leg."

The Iron Man star has a lot of respect for his Marvel colleague, and in the article, RDJ also talks about Evan's growth in the MCU. Noting how he's already been in hundreds of scenes with Evans, Downey Jr. talks about how much he admires Evan's ability to lighten the mood, a character trait that was developed over the years.

"...I've also seen him, over the last 10 years, go from being someone who had laughably real social anxiety to someone who has grown more and more comfortable in their own skin," RDJ reveals.

It's lovely hearing Downey Jr. share such kind words for Evans, especially since Iron Man and Captain America have since had a falling out in Captain America: Civil War. While Avengers: Infinity War didn't leave any room for the two to share scenes together, we're all hoping that the two finally patch things up in Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame premieres April 26, 2019.
