Rian Johnson Says That Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Detractors Are “Passionate”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have experienced both commercial and critical success during its release, but the film has also become one of the franchise's most divisive Star Wars installments.

Though there were quite a number of fans who enjoyed the risks that the film took, others didn't quite appreciate how the film subverted fan theories and broke Star Wars tradition.

The Last Jedi was met with a lot of outrage from a vocal portion of the fanbase because they didn't like how Luke (Mark Hamill) was turned into a bitter and old hermit or how Rey (Daisy Ridley) turned out to be a nobody or how they didn't like a number of other different things.

Though fan's comments online can be overwhelming, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson seems to look at the detractors in a positive light, telling Fandango's Erik Davis at this year's SXSW that the fans are just passionate.

"I feel like every Star Wars thing that ever gets made has a big, loud response because Star Wars fans are passionate and that's what makes them awesome," Johnson told the publication. "I don't think it's possible if you're really telling a story you care about and having it come from your heart it's just not possible to be intellectually processing what everyone else wants. Nor would it be a healthy thing, I don't think that's a good way to tell a story."

Johnson makes sense. There's no reason to change a good story half way just because readers or viewers want something else – that would just ruin the outcome of the story that you'd like to tell. Guess fans shouldn't expect The Last Jedi backlash to hold sway over Johnson's new Star Wars trilogy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently available on Digital HD and will be made available on Blu-Ray and DVD tomorrow, March 27.
