Rian Johnson Explains Why (Spoiler) Couldn’t Appear In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars has its fair share of cameos, but fans were pretty surprised to see a certain fan favorite turn up in The Last Jedi.

Though Yoda's cackling playfulness was a welcome surprise in The Last Jedi, fans were wondering why director Rian Johnson didn't have Obi-Wan Kenobi make an appearance in the sequel trilogy installment. After all, J.J. Abrams did sneak the Jedi Knight's voice file in The Force Awakens.

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson explains the reason why he decided to leave Obi-Wan out of his film. Not only was it difficult to use Obi-Wan because of Alec Guinness' passing, but Johnson just couldn't find anyone better to help beat some sense into Luke.

"When I was thinking about what Luke's arc is going to be, and realized that someone coming back and kicking his butt would be his final beat on the island, Yoda just made the most sense," the filmmaker explained.

Though it's definitely a shame that Johnson couldn't use Obi-Wan in The Last Jedi, the director does make sense – Luke might have first met Obi-Wan, but he did receive training from Yoda. It's also pretty cool seeing Yoda kick Luke's butt again in the movie.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
