Last week, Disney revealed a new set of release dates for the Star Wars franchise, unveiling three different unnamed Star Wars film projects. While most speculate that these untitled Star Wars projects might mean release dates for Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' upcoming Star Wars trilogy, others are hoping that the announcement could be taken as an indication that Lucasfilm intends to cancel Rian Johnson's own set of Star Wars films.

Despite its major commercial and critical success, Johnson's first Star Wars: The Last Jedi become one of the most divisive films in the Star Wars franchise. Even now, naysayers continue to complain about Johnson's film, bashing it for subverting fan expectations and for allegedly misusing legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

Now, a new wave of stark criticism against The Last Jedi has been circulating online, sparked by rumors regarding the cancellation of Johnson's Star Wars trilogy. Taking to Twitter, the filmmaker continues to defend himself and his film, responding to The Last Jedi's haters on social media.

Johnson's response to the Tweet is funny because the director makes a pretty strong case for himself. The Star Wars franchise has done the same kind of trick in the original trilogy, killing off Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi before giving any actual backstory to the character (we get that later on in the controversial Star Wars prequel trilogy).

Hopefully, we get to hear more about Johnson's Star Wars trilogy soon.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
