Rian Johnson Also “Dreaded” The Fate Of Luke Skywalker In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might be enjoying a lot of commercial and critical success, however the film has split the fanbase apart, with a number of fans complaining about how the film throws out Star Wars lore and subverts fan expectations.

One of their biggest complaints involves Luke's (Mark Hamill) characterization, as well as his death. Not only did fans like how writer/director Rian Johnson turned their classic hero into an old, bitter and jaded hermit, they also hated how the filmmaker supposedly "robbed" the character of the chance for a cooler arc in Episode IX.

Speaking in an interview with the Huffington Post, Johnson admits that he also dreaded killing off Luke, even though "it felt like the right moment" at the same time.

"When I realized that that's where Luke was going to get to by the end of the movie, and when I realized this was gonna be an emotionally rich arc for him, it seemed like if there was a time to give him his moment, this would be it.I wasn't looking forward to it. I was kind of dreading it, but at the same time it felt like the right moment. It felt like the right time in this trilogy."

Fans might have felt like Luke's story in Star Wars' sequel trilogy might have ended too soon, however Johnson's story definitely gave an emotionally charged ending for the Jedi Master. There's no better way to see Luke off than twin suns setting in Ahch-To.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
