Pacific Rim 3: Director Reveals there was Supposed to be more to Mako's Arc

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR PACIFIC RIM UPRISING]

Pacific Rim Uprising may have been missing a huge chunk of the cast from the first film, but it did feature returning faces, particularly Rinko Kikuchi's Mako Mori. With Mako dying early on in the film, director Steven S. DeKnight reveals that there is still more to her story with Pacific Rim 3.

He posts:

For now, it looks like Mako's arc has ended. DeKnight goes on this long thread about how she was supposed to end up in a coma, and there was also supposed to be a reason why she didn't pilot Jaegers anymore.

With Pacific Rim Uprising underperforming in the box office, a lot of people think that this puts the status of the third movie in limbo. Personally, I think the movie improved upon the original, featuring more Jaeger/Kaiju fights and having moments for all pilots to shine. I absolutely love how John Boyega provides a meta commentary for all the tropes that happen in the film.

We don't know when Pacific Rim 3 will be coming to theaters, but I'm fine if DeKnight comes back to direct. No offense to del Toro, but I thought the first Pacific Rim was kind of wasted potential; terrific world-building, but terrible use of giant robots.
