New For Pixar’s ‘Coco’ Makes It Look Less Like 'The Book Of Life'

When the trailer for Pixar's Coco first came out, it was heavily bashed for looking too similar to the Reel FX's The Book of Life which came out in 2014. A new trailer has just dropped for the movie, and it looks to highlight places in the movie which look different from the 2014 film.

For one, The Book of Life didn't feature some sort of ‘train station' where the dead would travel back to the land of the living. This version of the afterlife also looks to have more extensive world-building as the dead apparently have people who keep tabs on the world's ‘citizens.'

A lot of people, however, still can't ignore that Coco still has too many elements borrowed from The Book of Life. Besides the fact that both stories have characters that journey to the Land of the Dead, the protagonists also meet their dead family members, have an affinity for music (particularly the guitar), and have names that start with "Man" (The Book of Life's protagonist is named Manolo, Coco's is named Manuel).

I guess Coco is still different in the sense that there isn't any love story presented for the main character, and it looks to focus solely on the world of the dead. In The Book of Life, there was also an ongoing arc in the Land of the Living.

If I were being honest, I think the last Pixar movie that I felt had an original premise was Inside Out. I wasn't really impressed with Finding Dory or The Good Dinosaur, but I'm betting Pixar will still find a way to make this movie enjoyable for both kids and adults. Sure The Book of Life was visually stunning, but man was the story cheesy. Bring on the tears!

Coco is set to come out Nov. 22.
