New Chewbacca Star “Profoundly Grateful” For Role In Han Solo

Peter Mayhew was the first to portray Han Solo's (Harrison Ford) loveable Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca and while the English-American actor would certainly love to reprise the role, it seems like Mayhew's age and his ailing knee problems hinder him from doing so. Lucasfilm decided to bring in former Finnish basketball player Joonas Suotamo to take his place in certain parts of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Suotamo is also relieving Mayhew of the role fully in the upcoming Star Wars spinoff, Han Solo.

Now, Suotamo's decided to take to Twitter to express his gratitude over being given the chance to play Chewie. In the post, the basketball player thanks everyone that's helped him in his life and says that he'll do his best to honor Mayhew in both films.

Though it seems like Chewbacca is an easy role to play, putting on the costume of the iconic Wookie takes a lot of work. Luckily Suotama's learned from the best. It's nice to see Suotamo expressing his thanks to the people around him, being humbled and honored by the role he's playing.
