After becoming a smash hit in Japan, Netflix will finally be releasing the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist film later this month. To commemorate the occasion, the streaming service has released a new trailer with English subtitles, so fans can finally see what the characters are saying. It definitely looks like a faithful adaptation of the source material, though some would argue that the film is a little too much like the anime and manga.
The trailer shows viewers a decent recap of the film, including how Edward and Al ended up in the position they're in. Fans of the popular anime/manga know that Ed and Al tried to bring back their mother with alchemy and paid a huge price, with Ed losing his leg and Al losing his entire body. Ed had to sacrifice his arm so that he could transmute Al's soul into his signature armor.
We also get to see a number of the series' most popular characters, from Winry Rockbell to Colonel Mustang, and the Homunculus consisting of Lust, Gluttony, and Envy. This is where the film might experience some trouble. Considering how many events are shown in the film, there's a solid chance that the final product might feel a bit rushed. Here's hoping that isn't the case.
Directed by Fumihiko Sori, the film takes place in an alternate reality 20th century where alchemy is real. The story follows Edward (Ryosuke Yamada) and Alphonse Elric (voiced by Atomu Mizuishi) who, after trying the forbidden technique of human transmutation, suffer the deadly consequences. Edward loses his left leg and right arm while Alphonese loses an entire body. Edward sacrificd his right arm to save his brother's soul by attaching it to a metal armor. Edward is given metal prosthetics to replace his arm and leg. The Elric brothers embark on a journey to find the legendary Philosopher's Stone.
Fullmetal Alchemist will be streamable on Netflix next week, on February 19.
