Maul’s Voice Actor Loved Former Sith Lord’s Meaningful Conclusion

Star Wars Rebels just had its epic season 3 finale last weekend, however fans still can't get over the fact that the series ended Maul's arc the way they did during the third season of the popular Star Wars animated series.

The former Sith Lord is a fan-favorite villain and while many found the character's final battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi in the series' Twin Suns episode as a poetic end to the character, others we're underwhelmed by the fight. However, in an interview with StarWars.com, Maul's voice actor Sam Witwer says that concluding Maul's story has been rather meaningful to him.

"It was our responsibility to make a character with intellect and a heart and a soul and dreams of his own," Witwer said.

"I'm thrilled, because we didn't get to finish The Clone Wars in the way that we had planned," the voice actor explained. "We had a lot more Maul to go. So being able to conclude that arc with this character that I've been playing now for a few years, it's tremendously meaningful for me, and I feel very lucky to be here."

"I love the idea," Witwer says. "I love the fact that he's that close to redemption and he maybe doesn't get there. He misses the point. But at the same time, through the cinematography, there's a clarity that he has been, if not redeemed, forgiven."

Witwer's explanation does hit a spot in the gut – it's hard not to love an ending that shows a character who finds himself so close to redemption. In a way, it's rather bittersweet.

Now that Star Wars Rebelsi season 3 has come to an end, fans anticipate the announcement of the season 4 premiere at this year's Star Wars Celebration at Orlando which begins on April 13.
