Matthew Vaughn Describes His Version Of Superman, And Maybe Man Of Steel 2

When Matthew Vaughn revealed that he had been contacted by DC and Warner Bros about possibly directingMan of Steel 2, the Internet was quite receptive to the idea. Though it isn't clear if he will indeed helm the film, Vaughn has shown plenty of interest in a Superman film. Considering his resume, Vaughn could be a good fit for the world's first superhero, minus all the blood and gore.

During an interview with Collider, the Kingsman director was asked about his ideal version of Superman. Here is what he had to say:

"Weirdly if I did do Superman—and I made the mistake of telling someone yesterday I have spoken about it and then wallop (laughs)—I think my main take would be, it's really boring but make a Superman film. I just don't feel a proper Superman—I think Donner did it to perfection for that time. Just doing the modern—I wanna do a modern version of the Donner [version]. Go back to the source material… For me Superman is color, feel-good, heroic. He's a beacon of light in darkness. And that's what I think Superman should be."

It's a statement a lot of DC fans can agree with. While Man of Steel wasn't a horrible movie, it was a bit too dark and grim for its own good. This isn't to say that Superman should never go through troubles, or only have light adventures, but the character's lack of color and personality was a definite misstep. Vaughn bringing back some old-school values, whilst also adding his wit and sense of humor to the mix, could make for a great superhero flick.

That isn't to say paying tribute to the Donner films is the only way to make a Superman movie. One only needs to look at Superman Returns to know that nostalgia pandering can go bad in a big way. Unlike Returns, which was a sequel to a director's cut of a then decades old film. Vaughn would be directing a sequel to Man of Steel, a film that only came out four years ago, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Man of Steel 2 doesn't have a release date yet. Justice League is slated for a November 17 release. Kingsman: The Golden Circle hits theaters this Friday, on September 22.
