Marvel Studios Could Possibly Ditch Organizing Movies In "Phases" After The End Of Phase 3

As of now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is undergoing Phase 3 which ends with the fourth Avengers movie. Though there are plans to make movies when Phase 3 ends, it's possible that Marvel will ditch calling the future batch of movies "Phase 4."

In an interview with Collider, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige said:

"We've been lucky that [contract expirations] haven't factored in too much. We've had people under contract for certain films, then we've had new ideas and new directions like Civil War like we wanted to do, and we've been lucky enough to make new contracts. Or Spider-Man: Homecoming, the cast has been awesome in their enthusiasm for the direction and the storylines that we've been telling. So it really does, right now, all start with where we wanna take the stories. Certainly as we get to Infinity War there is a sense of a climax if not a conclusion to, by the time we're at untitled Avengers 4, the 22 movies that will have encompassed the first three phases of the MCU. And what happens after that will be very different. I don't know if it's Phase 4, it might be a new thing."

In my honest opinion, I think that Marvel Studios is smart in thinking about shaking up the formula. Franchise Fatigue is a real thing, and with I was honestly starting to feel it by the time Doctor Strange came out last year. The formula was just so familiar already that the Universe was starting to feel stale.

Hopefully, James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 brings something new to the table, and Marvel would be more open to doing movies that don't adhere to the so-called "Marvel Formula."

The next movie in the Marvel lineup is GOTG Vol. 2 and it comes out on May 5. Avengers 4 is set for a release on May 3, 2019.
