Major Stranger Things Character Was Originally Supposed To Die

The Duffer Bros. did a great job with Stranger Things Season 2 (You can read our review here) but did you know that what many would consider as Netflix's best original series was initially pitched as a one-season show? And there was one major character who was originally supposed to die: Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown).

The info was revealed by The Duffer Brothers (via Cinemablend) in their recent appearance at a Master Class Q&A session at Chapman University. According to them, the fan-favorite badass Eleven a.k.a. Jane Ives would have died if Stranger Things only lasted one season. Ross Duffer explained the thought process behind it, saying:

Maybe I shouldn't say this because I like to pretend that it was all planned out, but it was originally pitched as a limited series. So it was like, Eleven was gonna sacrifice herself and save the world and then that was gonna be it, because there was a moment where limited series were a big deal.

So Eleven was supposed to die forever after saving Mike and his friends from the Demogorgon. Thanks to the show's massive success, the series is currently planned to have at least 4 seasons.

Ross Duffer went on to explain how the business side of TV inspired their approach to the series:

This is where the business side comes in. When we started pitching it it was like 'we don't make money off of limited series.' And I remember when we went into Netflix and we pitched this they were like 'well, we like this but how could it keep going?' And you're just sort of riffing in the moment and we were like 'well Will's back from this other dimension and he's not doing very well.' And they were like 'great!'

It's good to know that they have interesting ideas to continue the series. I just hope that they'll have enough genuine ideas to expand the story on instead of spitballing filler scenes just for the sake of prolonging the series.
