This holiday season, Magic: The Gathering players will be motivated to play more thanks to the special prizes this November and December. First off, Standard Showdown is a weekly event that local gaming stores can host on Saturdays from November 16 to December 17. The three or four-round events will be Standard format and offer a special prize from the Wizards of the Coast: Standard Showdown Boosters.
As announced on Wizards Play Network, Standard Showdown Boosters each contain three cards:
> two Standard-legal rares or mythics
> one foil (any rarity) including the chance at at a Kaladesh Invention or Zendikar Expedition.
This is exciting for players who want to get Masterpiece cards for Christmas. The foil slot will contain a Masterpiece card at a rate of 1 in every 33 boosters. It's up to each store to decide how the boosteres will be distributed, but apart from performance, Wizards suggests using the special packs for attendance and new players to events.
Shops can also get 44 Standard Showdown Boosters to use as buy-a-box promos over the holiday season. Each purchase of a Kaladesh Booster Box will give the customer two three-card boosters.
