On the GAM podcast website, Thompson explained why I quit the Magic Pro League, a group of 32 of the top players with $75,000 contract each to stream Magic Arena and compete in high-level Magic tournaments.

"I joined the Magic Pro League in the first place because it seemed easier to make a difference from the inside," Thompson wrote. "I was wrong. The lack of transparency and unwillingness to listen to feedback continue to be huge issues."

Thompson went on to list the reasons why he's quitting the MPL such as communication problems, contractual issues, lack of coverage, and the lack of information about the Magic Online Championship. "The system is currently a mess and since it doesn't look like it will be fixed any time soon, it's not one that I'd currently like to participate in," Thompson said.

Last September, Thompson refused to play at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship to protest the state of the game.

Thompson is the third player to leave the MPL for the 2019 season but the first resign willingly. Former Hall of Famers Owen Turtenwald and Yuuya Watanabe had been removed from the MPL.
