Magic: The Gathering Old School Champion Caught With 2 Copies of Circle of Protection: Red

There was a Magic: The Gathering Old School Championship side event at MagicFest Las Vegas this weekend, and Brian Weissman won the entire tournament but one person pointed out what seems like a decklist error based on two photos of the deck.

After Channelfireball shared a photo of Weissman's winning deck on Twitter, someone notice one notable difference between it and another photo of the same deck by his Round 4 opponent, Twitter user @_Elantris_. As Harlan Firer pointed out on Twitter, the winning decklist photo reveals only one copy of "Circle of Protection: Red" while the photo from his Round 4 opponent revealed two copies.

It's easy to assume that Weissman may have cheated by having a card that was not in his original decklist. Even some people in the Magic community jokingly commented that this mishap is bringing the old school cheating back to old school Magic, but Weissman responded on Twitter defending the observation: "Short explanation: I ran the same 75 for the tourney, and had him photograph my testing list, which was what I wanted public. There is no rule requiring you to have your same list photographed, we didn't register decks or anything. Put your pitchforks away."

The tournament was unsanctioned so they probably didn't register decklists but for a tournament with a $50 entry, Channelfireball would need to address this issue if Weissman actually cheated. According to Michael Arrowsmith, the head judge of the Old School Championship, he is looking into it and will let Channelfireball Events know, and if there's an issue, they will address it.

MagicFest Las Vegas is happening this weekend with double Grand Prix events: Modern and Limited (Modern Horizons). You can watch it live on Twitch.tv/channelfireball.
