Lucasfilm Announcing New 2020 Star Wars Spinoff Next Month

Last month, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the studio was planning to announce the details of its next Star Wars spinoff film. The franchise's films outside the regular saga series has been doing pretty well with the financial and critical success of Rogue One, and with Han Solo on the way, it seems like the studio intends to bring even more spinoff stories to the big screen.

Now, speaking with Vanity Fair for its 40thStar Wars Anniversary Issue, Kennedy updates fans with news on the Star Wars spinoff announcement. According to the Lucasfilm bigwig, not only is the studio making the decision next month, the spinoff will also fill in the blank slate for 2020.

"Yes. We haven't identified it yet, but yes. We have a couple of things right now that we're circling, and we'll make a decision between the two pretty shortly. It's probably for 2020, and we will make a decision by June."

This is great news for fans. Disney had revealed its future lineup late in April, and fans were pretty worried because the company had nothing written down for Star Wars on 2020 – the year after the release of the third and final installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Now, as many have probably expected, Lucasfilm is filling in the year with a standalone that has been rumored to feature Boba Fett or Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Lucasfilm has been making a point to release one Star Wars film each year, and it would come as a surprise if they skipped 2020.

This year's film is Star Wars: The Last Jedi which premieres on December 15.
