Star Wars: The Last Jedi is fast approaching its release date, but before the highly anticipated Star Wars sequel trilogy installment hits cinemas, special effects artists Neal Scanlan wants fans to learn a little bit more about some of the galaxy's new furry friends, the Fathiers.

Sitting down with Empire, Scanlan gave some new insight on the new life forms being brought into The Last Jedi, talking about how the Fatheirs were developed through a mix of computer graphics integration and practical effects.

According to the digital effects artist, the Fathiers are equine racing creatures on Canto Bight, and it seems like Finn (John Boyega) gets to touch it in his mission with Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) in The Force Awakens sequel.

"Fathiers have the power and majestic quality that one might find in a male lion and also beauty in their equine aspects. They're racing creatures, with bets placed upon them, and are subjected to slightly cruel treatment. We knew any version of those in a wide shot would be CG but we produced a real-scale practical version for the first encounter with a Fathier, so it was able to look over the stable door and Finn could touch and act with it. They're amazing creatures."

Though the Fathiers didn't have as much time in the spotlight as the Porgs in The Last Jedi's marketing campaign, fans still got to see a quick shot of the equine creature in the behind-the-scenes reel for the film. We definitely can't wait to see more of these beauties when the film comes around in December.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
