Kevin Feige: Black Widow was Never Planned to be Rated R

After almost 10 years in the MCU, Black Widow is finally ready to get her own solo film courtesy of Marvel Studios. A rumor going around was that the film was going to be R-rated, but Marvel head Kevin Feige has squashed those rumors.

Talking to ComicBook, Feige confirms that there were never any plans on having Black Widow be rated R. He explained, "It never was going to be [rated R]… Somebody writes, 'I hear it's R-rated!' And then everybody writes it up."

It's worth noting that the rumor has been around for months, but if the head of the MCU himself says that the Black Widow film isn't going to be rated R, then it may as well wouldn't be.

Personally though, I think an R-rated movie would be the very thing that Marvel needs for Black Widow. After 10 years and more than 20 films, the audience has started to see a formula with MCU films, and a change in pace is something we desperately need. With the Fox heroes like Deadpool also incoming, it would be nice if we were introduced to a more mature story with an MCU vet in the spotlight.

For now, we don't know what stage in production Black Widow is, but hopefully we get an update within the year. So far, the last film we have on Marvel's slate in Spider-Man: Far from Home, and after that, we have no idea what to expect.

Hopefully Black Widow hits theaters sometime in 2020.
