Joss Whedon Officially Exits Batgirl; WB Said to be Looking for a Female Director This Time

After the success of Wonder Woman, DC was more confident than ever to move forward with their Batgirl movie, and fans rejoiced when they heard that Joss Whedon was going to direct. As it turns out, Whedon has left the project after admittedly not knowing how to treat the character.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon said:

"Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn't have a story… I'm grateful to Geoff [Johns] and Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for 'failed?'"

Some inside sources have also suggested that even without story issues, Whedon might be facing backlash for directing a female-lead movie, what with today's "cultural entertainment environment." It would almost be akin to having a white filmmaker make Black Panther.

Then again, Whedon has been instrumental in pushing forward the female-action-hero genre with his show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I don't think people have forgotten that.

I have no doubt that Whedon will find the right project soon, but I think that it's a bit counter-progressive to have directors chosen because of affirmative action instead of talent. I say it doesn't matter what color or gender the director is, as long as they are right for the job.

No release date has been announced for Batgirl.
