Joker Director Says There’s ‘Not One Green Screen in This Movie’

Though the DCEU may still need to find its footing when it comes to the box office, their place behind the MCU has forced them to try and be more experimental. The first of these experiments is Todd Phillips' Joker movie, and Phillips himself talks about the minimal use of CG in this film.

Talking to Empire (via Johnny Sobczak on Twitter), Phillips had this to say about shooting on location in New York City:

"The energy you get from an actor is different on 179th Street and Jerome Avenue in the Bronx than if we did that with green screen, which, by the way, I don't even know how to do shit like that. There's not one green screen in this movie."

While superhero movies have always been given massive budgets for jaw-dropping set pieces, Joker promises to be a smaller, gritty film. The budget for the movie is said to be close to only $30 million, compared to other DC movies that tend to cost upwards of $100 million every time.

We don't know how Joker will fare in the box office, but personally, I think the film looks amazing. I think the problem with the earlier DCEU movies is that they tried to make the movies mature while at the same time palatable for children. With Joker though, I think the audience is clearly the adults who read comic books; but I'm sure some cinephiles who love psychological character studies will find this film interesting as well.

Catch Joker when it hits theaters Oct. 4.
