John Williams Might Retire After Star Wars Episode IX

Star Wars: Episode IX is going to be huge for a number of reasons. Aside from being the ninth Star Wars film, it will also conclude the current trilogy starring Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Kylo-Ren. It also brought back J.J. Abrams to the director's chair after Colin Trevorrow left the position after a bout of creative differences.

There's also another reason why the film will be noteworthy; it could be the final installment in the franchise to have a score from the legendary John Williams.

During an interview with KUSC, Williams seemed to indicate that he would be retiring after the ninth film in the franchise. The veteran composer didn't seem to bother by it, noting that Disney and Lucasfilm will continue to take the franchise to further heights.

"We know J.J. Abrams is preparing [Star Wars: Episode IX] now, that I will hopefully do next year for him. I look forward to it. It will round out a series of nine [films]. That will be quite enough for me. Disney Studios probably will take it further. As you know, Disney has acquired the rights for Lucasfilm, and they will probably continue on through… decades, possibly, doing Star Wars-related attractions."

Considering how Williams is in his 80's, it's more than understandable that the composer would want to step down from the franchise. That's not to say he's bad at his job - The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi had awesome music - but he definitely deserves to go out on top.

Star Wars: Episode IX comes out on December 20, 2019.
