J.J. Abrams Says He Doesn’t Need To 'Repair' Star Wars After Episode IX

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have been a commercial and critical success when it released back in 2017, but the film also ended up becoming one of the most divisive entries in the Star Wars franchise. Sure, the film had quite a number of supporters, but more traditional fans complained about how The Last Jedi subverted fan expectations and "misused" legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

Now, The Last Jedi haters are hoping that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker fixes what they consider mistakes, however, Episode IX director J.J. Abrams says that he didn't really have to try to "repair" anything from Episode VIII.

Speaking in an interview with Empire, Abrams says that he respects the choices that Rian Johnson made when he directed The Last Jedi.

"I never found myself trying to repair anything. If I had done VIII, I would have done things differently, just as Rian [Johnson] would have done things differently if he had done VII. But having worked on television series, I was accustomed to creating stories and characters that then were run by other people," Abrams told the entertainment outlet, "If you're willing to walk away from the thing that you created and you believe it's in trustworthy hands, you have to accept that some of the decisions being made are not gonna be the same that you would make. And if you come back into it, you have to honor what's been done."

It's great to hear Abrams supporting Johnson. There are some fans who've been making aggressive jabs at Johnson and at The Last Jedi. Not only do have these haters created petitions against the film, but some have also made personal attacks at the film's cast and crew.

We're not entirely surprised by Abrams' response, though. The director has been supportive of The Last Jedi in previous interviews, echoing the same sentiments as this. We can't wait to see what Abrams has done for his next Star Wars film.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
