Japan Urges Pokemon Go Players To Stay Out of Fukushima Disaster Zone

Japan is asking to remove any wild Pokemon in the Fukushima exclusion zone after the discovery of one of Pokemon Go's characters on a power station's site.

As The Guardian reports, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (Tepco) has requested that developer Niantic and the Pokemon Company to stop Pokemon from appearing in and around the areas affected by the nuclear reactor meltdown in Fukushima to help prevent encouraging Pokemon Go users to enter dangerous zones.

Tepco confirmed that three sites in the area were scouted: "the Fukushima Daiichi plant, the Fukushima Daini plant and the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata Prefecture,"

Masao Uchibori, the Governor of Fukushima Governor, said that it would be dangerous for players to explore the areas due to their radioactive nature. He confirmed that "the prefectural government will consider how to draw attention to this." Nagasaki city also asked Niantic to remove Pokemon from Nagasaki Peace Park, a local memorial for the victims of the 1945 explosion.

Niantic said that it would modify the app if the company experienced problems.

This isn't the first time Pokemon Go spread its presence where it shouldn't. The Holocaust Museum in Washington DC requested Niantic to remove the presence of unwanted Pokemon in the area.
