James Wan Talks A Bit About Aquaman Spinoff ‘The Trench’

One of the breakout scenes from Aquaman was the horror-induced Trench sequence, and it's been announced a while ago that Wan will be making a spinoff movie based on that location. Talking to ComicBook, Wan gives us a little update on The Trench.

Wan explains:

"We, you know, we're still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don't want to get into that too much, but definitely it's one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it's going to play more as a monster horror movie then it will as a superhero film, but it's still definitely part of the Aquaman world."

Though DC has been playing second fiddle to the MCU, you have to hand it to them trying to make more experimental superhero movies. We have Joker coming out later this year, and if that succeeds, we could be looking at a lot more one-off movies.

Personally, I don't think a movie centered on The Trench is interesting enough, but I wouldn't be objected to it being revisted in another DCEU flick. Maybe they could have it be a part of that Justice League Dark film that never happens. You think it's too late to include it in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad? How about Matt Reeves' The Batman?

We don't know when this Trench movie is set to come out, but we do know that the sequel for Aquaman is aiming for a release in Dec. 16, 2022.
