James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Could be R-Rated as Well

Judging by the tone of Aquaman and Shazam!, it looked like the DCEU was pushing forward to a more kid-friendly direction, but after the success of the R-rated Joker, it looks like WB will want to keep making comic book films for the more adult fans.

According to Variety, multiple insiders are predicting that WB will settle for an R-Rating for James Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad. Next year's Birds of Prey is already going for an adult rating as well, and judging by the success of Joker, there's definitely an audience for these darker, adult superhero films.

With Guardians of the Galaxy coming out as kid-friendly, I would actually love to see Gunn go all out when it comes to Suicide Squad. If you want a taste of what Gunn can do with the R-rated genre, I suggest you check out his movie Super starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page.

For now, The Suicide Squad is currently under production and based on the set photos we've seen, it looks to be a lot more colorful and comic-book-ish as compared to David Ayer's first film. While I personally loved the aesthetic of Suicide Squad, I'm sure Gunn has something to bring to the table when it comes to this reboot/sequel. Let's just hope that WB manages to let him do his thing rather than heavily meddle like they did with the first SS and Justice League.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is set to release Aug. 6, 2021. The R-rated Birds of Prey is set to hit theaters Feb. 7, 2020.
