James Gunn Defends Chris Pratt After Netizens Attack Him For Saying He’d Pray For Kevin Smith

Earlier today, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt received some pretty heavy backlash after the actor told Kevin Smith that he would pray for his well-being. The Clerks director had announced on social media that he had suffered a major heart attack, and Pratt was one of the many celebrities who had reached out to Smith to tell him that they were there for him.

Taking to Twitter, the Marvel star told Smith that even though he didn't know the filmmaker too well, he had loved him since Clerks and he was "praying (his) ass off for (him)" because he believed in the healing power of prayer."

In another tweet, Pratt went on to add "Praying for you. I will continue to. You inspired me with Clerks when I was a senior HS. I'm tagging my Lb/rb football coach who showed me the movie cause he believed in me and knew I'd be inspired @hodge1916."

Though the message seems sincere enough, Pratt was then attacked for saying that he'd "pray" for smith, with many social media users saying that "thoughts and prayers" weren't enough to stop the mass shootings. A lot of politicians have been using the term "thoughts and prayers" to "sympathize" with the tragedy of the mass shootings, and netizens have taken Pratt's message in a similar light.

Though the Marvel star didn't respond to the backlash against his "prayers," Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn stood up for him, explaining why people's anger towards Pratt was misguided.

Gunn does make a strong point – Pratt wouldn't do any good intervening with Smith's operation. The best the actor could really do is sent his prayers. What do you think of the issue? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
