James Cameron: Opening Avatar Sequels Against Star Wars Movies Would've Been 'Stupid'

James Cameron recently elaborated on the release plans for the Avatar sequels.

Speaking to Famousmonsters.com, Cameron explained the reason why the sequels are spaced between 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023 was to prevent a potential clash against Star Wars films.

"My original plan was to release them a year apart, but we're opening that up," Cameron explained "If for no other reason than that I don't want to land on the same date as one of the Star Wars sequels. That wouldn't be fair to them. No, that's just good business. I don't want to go head-to-head with Star Wars. That would be stupid. And hopefully they won't want to go head-to-head with us."

Cameron made the announcement about the sequels to his 2009 epic sci-fi epic at CinemaCon last week. The sequels are being filmed concurrently.
