Hellboy Creator Mike Mignola Wants Reboot To Jumpstart A Cinematic Universe

Millennium Films is working on an R-rated Hellboy reboot and it looks like the character's comicbook creator Mike Mignola is hoping that the film might start a cinematic universe for the unwilling Harbinger of the Apocalypse.

Discussing the Hellboy comics in an interview with The Verge, Mignola went on to talk about the upcoming R-rated reboot staring Stranger Things' David Harbour. According to the comicbook writer, the Hellboy reboot (which has recently dropped its Rise of the Blood Queen subtitle) is going to be loosely based around one the Hellboy graphic novels and Mignola hopes that it'll introduce enough elements to launch a cinematic universe for Anung Un Rama.

"Yeah. It's a very loose adaptation of one of the Hellboy graphic novels. When you have more books out there, you have a lot more to sift through. You can look around at how big the world is, and borrow pieces from here and there. You want to sell a larger world, but you have to pick and choose what goes in there. The challenge for us has been to not lose sight of the specific story, but suggest the elements of a larger story. My hope is that this introduces a lot of stuff that then expands into a Hellboy Cinematic Universe."

Various studios have been launching their own cinematic universes after Marvel's success and most of them are still tottering as they build the foundations of their various franchises. The DC Extended Universe had a very rough start last year, and so has Universal's Dark Universe.

While Hellboy does have a strong following, the chances of building a shared universe really depends on the success of the R-rated reboot.

The Hellboy reboot directed by Neil Marshall is scheduled for release sometime in 2018.
